This group of buildings once housed the UW Madison Veterinary school and research programs. As the apocalypse wiped out the vast majority of humans, farm animals took a similarly devastating blow. 40 well educated people direct the studies here, assisted by about 110 understudies (i.e. shit shovelers). These people are working improve many species so they are better adapted to the new conditions of the world. This includes finding ways to increase per-animal yield of eggs, milk, meat etc, change dietary requirements, and make each species more hearty overall.Yes, its animal testing, but who is going to organize a protest when few people are sure where their next meal is coming from.The goal here is to improve the species and share them with the public in order to increase the overall conditions of living for everyone. Chickens have thus far been the most successful at adapting, while pigs, valuable for their ability to eat nearly anything and turn it into body mass, have had incredible difficulty reproducing. The facility sells a limited amount of excess eggs, meat and dairy products to the public. Security is fairly rigid, as they do not want to lose these assets to shortsighted raiders, but many guards will look the other way when employees tuck some eggs and milk away "to bring home to the family".
